Arap Moi Children’s Home For many years now, Greensteds has had close links with Arap Moi Children’s Home. The orphanage is situated in the centre of Nakuru and is home to more than 200 children. Many of the children arrive at the Home as babies, often having been abandoned, and young people are accommodated up until they are able to support themselves independently. We see our role as getting alongside the children, getting to know them and showing them that there are people who care. Students tend to form a strong allegiance with Arap Moi and as teachers we are often amazed at how we see our students choosing to ‘make a difference’ in these children’s lives; be it the tenderness with which our older boys look after the babies, the energetic games played with the lively primary school aged children or simply sitting alongside chatting.
Over the years, Greensteds has contributed much to Arap Moi. Friends of Mr Bentley funded the building of the baby wing and for over five years now have provided quality formula milk for the babies, cleaning products and the wages of three additional members of staff. Mr Bentley’s son and a friend painted cartoons on the dining hall and numerous walls throughout the Home. Mr Rowe (2006–2008 and 2010), in memory of a friend who passed away, built a bright and spacious laundry. Mrs Glover (2008-2010) and Mr Patter funded the brightly coloured playground as well as new mattresses, pillows, framed photos, cuddly toys and the smartly paved kitchen area.
