MAKING A DIFFERENCE - SUPPORTING OPERATION SMILE – OPERATION SMILE IN NAKURU - KENYA !- Every year since 1993, Greensteds International School has played a BIG role in Operation Smile activities in Nakuru.
- Operation Smile is our official charity for the year.
- Operation Smile is a team that is made up of clinicians, doctors, professionals and volunteers of different fields from all around the world, largely doctors, who take unpaid time off to make a difference to people with cleft palate problems, serious burn scars and tissue damage, tumours and other related deformities.
- OP Smile gives a new lease to people who have suffered ostracization due to the way they look.
- Two years ago we raised Kes465,000.00. This year we raised over Kes.200,000.00 from various fund raising activities organized by the staff and the students’ own initiatives.
- Needless to say this is a tremendous opportunity to develop initiative and leadership, a chance to show our children do care and are a part of bringing positive change to their country!
What activities did we do to raise money in 2007?- The Annual Greensteds Fun Fare which attracted people even from Nakuru town.
- A sponsored Walk – round Greensteds School (5Km)- Caroline Ngarachu alone raised over 20,000!
- Stand Up and Smile alone raised---- This involved students standing on a raised platform for 24 hours and having sponges and other strange (but safe) items like rotten tomatoes, thrown at them. Students paid to get involved. This was sooo much fun as well.
- Bake Sales
Two Students (Dinah and Furaha) tied themselves together for a full day and raised 14,000-!!! - Students paid to watch a film on Big Screen
Our students always come up with creative and fun ways to raise money. However, more than anything we have children with big hearts and a passion for life. Often we cannot get a direct opportunity to make a lasting and positive difference in our world. Being part of Operation Smile is tremendous! Other Fund Raising Activities Students use the opportunity to give to have the opportunity to occupy their weekends and to have fun.
- For instance students select a newly released film and watch it on Big Screen. They pay 50 shillings or so which goes to a needy project.
- Recently the children raised funds on Valentines Day through sale of roses and sweets and also paid 50/- to dress in something red. This money was raised to help people in IDP camps.
- Students also organized what they call a ‘Groove’
- And this raised money for IDPs as well.
