Hawa Essuman on the News! Soul Boy is a film whose director is Greensteds bred. Hawa ESSUMAN IS Ghanaian but essentially Kenyan having lived, worked and learned in the country most of her life. Since her early years she has been passionate about drama and song and has plenty of achievements in this field. In 2010 Soul Boy will have its world premiere at the IFFR in the theme section Where Is Africa. The film has already won three awards: Signis Award at Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) 2010, Dioraphte Audience Award at the Gˆteborg International Film Festival in Sweden and Best Feature Film Award at the Rwanda Film Festival 2010. Hawa first worked with Capital FM. Then she ran with the television series, Makutano Junction as Assistant Director. Hawa has tremendous patience and has often worked in voluntary positions to get her job moving. She is so motivated and stands out as a shining example: equally dedicated and passionate about her career. Hawa attended Greensteds ten years ago. She was school prefect among other roles of leadership. Achievements: director of the films ‘Selfish’, ‘Lift’ and ‘Soul Boy’ among many other things Abalo LatigoAbalo Latigo left Greensteds in the nineties and went on to study in the USA. She had a sister here and they both excelled in school. Melissa her sister went on to a scholarship in MIT where she has also completed her masters. Abalo is currently working in dallas. She was a student in Greensteds for two years in which she was the head prefect in year thirteen. She loved every aspect of Greensteds, the teachers and students alike, the diversity and the range in age.'brilliant community' she says.June says, 'I remember, as a prefect, sending students running to the pavilion, ha ha, which sadly is not there anymore' She visited the school recently . 'I loved Biology lessons with Mr Foster, chemistry with Mr. Hawkins, maths with Mrs Jean Louis…...memories. Some of the friends I made are still very close friends now.' For her it was a special and life changing time of her young years.
She came back to Kenya and volunteered briefly at Kenyatta National Hospital, after which she was employed at Egerton University, Njoro, as a senior technologist for 2 years. In 2007 she left again to pursue her doctorate at Cardiff University. She told Ms Pim-Kaime, 'I am in my writing up year of my PhD in medical engineering focusing on motion analysis to analyse movement.' Did that sound normal and every day to you?
