Curriculum
The Foundation and Key Stage 1 Curriculum at Greensteds offers a broad and balanced approach to learning based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales, but adapted in some aspects to cater more appropriately for the international context in which the school operates. Planning takes place on a weekly basis within year groups within the framework of the school's long and medium term planning. Lessons are carefully differentiated to ensure challenge for every child and expert support is provided to those experiencing learning difficulties.
Subjects are taught both discretely and through an integrated approach. Expectations are high and each child’s progress is carefully monitored and tracked. This provides us with information about achievement and also enables targets to be set for the next stages of learning. Homework or Prep is provided three times a week in Key Stage 1 only. It is designed to consolidate the concepts covered in class and further develop understanding whilst fostering a good working relationship at home or in dorms and encouraging independent learning. The key learning areas for the Foundation Stage are:- Personal, social and emotional development;
- Communication, language and literacy;
- Mathematical development;
- Knowledge and understanding of the world;
- Physical development;
- Creative development.
In Key Stage 1 the key learning areas are Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Humanities (History and Geography), Information and Communication Technology, Art and Craft, Physical Education, Music, and French and Kiswahili. The timetable is arranged so that there is a balance of subjects across the week with PE, Music, French and Kiswahili taught by specialist teachers.
