Introduction

Some students struggle with their school work. They may have difficulties due to a learning disability that affects reading, or Maths, or writing. Their difficulties in reading or writing may affect almost all of their subjects. They may find it difficult to get organized for learning. They may struggle because they are studying in English and it is not their first language.

At Greensteds, support is provided in the senior years 7 through 10.

What we do
The primary responsibilities of the Learning Support staff are to:

  1. Assess new students using a standardized assessment program. The results of this assessment enable us to identify students who may have a learning disability.

  2. Plan and implement a program that will help the student overcome his or her learning difficulty. Support may be provided within the lesson assisting the subject teacher who is working with the identified student. Alternatively the student may need to be pulled out of class for one or two lessons a week for work with the Learning Support staff.

  3. Work with the class teachers in tracking the identified students’ progress.

  4. Support to students for whom English is a second or a third language. At the year 10 and 11 level this means working with a class towards completing the IGCSE  ESL  program. In Years 7-9, extra classes in English may replace a class or two in the student’s timetable.
