Inter-House Music Competition 2011This year marks our 6th Inter-house music competition. With each and every year, the standards have gone higher. Last year Nelion clinched the overall title whith runners-up Kibo losing by a single point. However, tables could be turned and the competition can go to any of the three contesting houses: Kibo, Nelion or Batian. The houses, led by the year 10 music students, have been consistent in their practices and with each and every passing day, the items keep on getting better. Indeed it is very demanding on them as well as the various groups but all that hard work will pay off in the end. Junior school Inter-house Music Competition 2011The junior school held its first inter-house music competition on Friday the 4th of February 2011 in the Performing Arts Department (PAD) hall with a very good turnout of many students and a few parents. The event was organised for the specific reason of giving many musically talented students of the junior school an opportunity to display and acknowledge their skills and encourage them to become even better musicians. In the past, these students rarely got the chance to take part in the yearly organised music competition as they were overshadowed by more developed and advanced musicians of the senior school and were not picked to represent their houses. There were a few curtain raising performances by James Gitonga (Yr. 5) and Niray Shah (Yr. 3) on the piano, Josiah Tocco (Yr. 5) and Edward Wandera (Yr. 5) on the guitar and Valery Nyamunga (Yr. 6) who sang a classic Swahili song. There were four main categories for the competition; solo singing (represented by Sammy of Yr. 5 – Nelion, Tiani of Yr. 2 – Batian and Cindy of Yr. 6 – Kibo) , solo instrumental (represented by Simran of Yr. 6 – Nelion, Kishan of Yr. 6 – Batian and Eugene of Yr. 6 – Kibo), choir song item and group dance item. The atmosphere in the hall was very lively and energetic as the audience, mostly of junior school students and a few from the senior school, cheered and applauded as they supported their respective houses. The panel of judges comprising of teachers from senior and junior school were impressed by most of the performances that were displayed and were also astonished by the amount of preparation that the students put in preparing for the competition. Tiani from year 2 displayed great talent vocally and challenged many aspiring to sing, while Kishan from year 6 gave the show an Asian feel as he did a solo on the Dhol (an Indian drum). Kibo was the winning team overall followed by Batian and Nelion in second and third positions respectively. In concluding the event, Mr Bolderston, the head of junior school, congratulated all participants as well as commended their dedication and ability to work together for the good of their respective houses.
