 UK Music Tour 2011

The school has been very active in organizing music tours to the UK. Our 3rd music tour was a huge success. The two weeks were absolutely amazing with performances ranging from schools to churches. The first week was a camping experience and thefunfair second week the team stayed in Plymouth University halls of residence. The final two days were spent in Heathrow inn where the group had an opportunity to travel and sightsee London and its environs.
This year (2011) marks our fourth tour to England. The group plans to visit the previous venues in the south and North of England. The party consists of a total of 35 musicians including staff. Plans are underway to depart on the 4th of July and return on the 19th of July 2011. Performances will include the Kenya High Commission in London as well as the University of York, various schools and churches. There is also an opportunity to do a joint workshop with various schools and a performance with a male voice choir! The party will have an opportunity to travel around England as well as visit Scotland on their sight seeing days.
Currently, rehearsals are in place as the group prepares an intense program for the tour which involves a wide repertoire of songs.

 UK TOUR 2006

In June 2006 Greensteds teachers, Nick Mwashimba, Francesca Kaime and Artie Smith, took a school music tour to the UK consisting of over 30 kids. Although the journey there was eventful to say the least, everyone reached there in high spirits. We were soon joined by ex-Greensteds gap year student Eduardo Lees who brought another dimension to our performances.

Our tour was split into 3 distinct weeks. The first week of our tour was in the Brighton and Worthing area. We were based at Lancing College and performed several concerts at churches and halls, as well as a joint concert with Boundstone School (a performing arts centre in Worthing).

The second week was in Plymouth, we stayed at the University halls of residence and played a joint concert with Callington Communtiy College (another performing arts school) which was both a lot of fun and a valuable learning experience for our musicians, as they learnt and rehearsed two new songs to perform together.

Our final destination was Chesterfield-home of our headmaster. We performed in the council chambers, and stayed in Zion Church for the week. Zion Church was definitely the highlight of the tour. We played our last concert there, including our entire set and a farewell song for Nick in front of the biggest audience of the tour, and they gave us a lovely send off for our journey back to Kenya.

Whilst on tour we were raising money for the Arap Moi Orphanage in Nakuru, and raised in excess of £3500.

The students represented both their school and their country with pride. Many of the students progressed their musical talents notably over the 3 weeks, and play now with more confidence and skill. Our concerts were received warmly by the audiences and they were very keen to invite us back again in the future. Overall the tour was a resounding success.

UK Music Tours.......Continues and it is now an annual event in our calender........

Plans are also in place to visit the BBC studios, conduct interviews with newspapers and probably get to the Royal Albert Hall. All interested parties are encouraged to get in touch with the Music Director, Greensteds School.
